As IAM celebrates 30 years of being a constructive religious voice in Africa, we spoke to some of our cherished friends and allies who have partnered with the organisation over the years.

This week, we hear from Rev. Itumeleng Kgaphole – Bishop in the Liberating Evangelical Lutheran Church in South Africa (Gauteng Synod).

“As a bishop in the Liberating Evangelical Lutheran Church in South Africa (Gauteng Synod), who also identifies as queer, and a convener of the Annual Queer Spirituality & Wellness Conferences, IAM has profoundly enhanced my ministry. Their support — particularly by providing expert voices for our queer conferences — has enriched our dialogues and uplifted queer spirituality. Being part of the IAM Queer Think Tank has expanded my understanding of gender theories and deepened my theological imagination. A practical step I’ve taken is implementing inclusive liturgies and affirming pastoral care in my ministry. I am deeply grateful to IAM for their consistent presence, wisdom, and prophetic companionship.
