As a minister, how can I be a good ally to Queer people in my congregation?
Good allyship begins with de-centering oneself, and taking the lead of the person, people or community that you are journeying with. The responsibility of accompaniment is an important one, and we believe in taking heed of the following as you embark on it:
- Engaging in meaningful dialogue rather than arduous debate allows people to be heard and seen.
- Be mindful of systemic power dynamics relating to race, gender, age and class when engaging people. This can be the difference between someone retreating or holding back, and them opening up.
- Share resource materials of organisations/networks that provide support or programs to LGBTQI+ community
- Get involved by volunteering or donating to LGBTQI+ organisations
Do you participate in interfaith programmes
IAM belongs to interfaith networks across the globe, whose primary work it is to advocate for the full recognition and celebration of LGBTQI+ people across all faith communities.
Do you host support groups for parents with Queer children?
Through our schools partnership, we contribute to equipping learners, parents and teachers with tools for comprehensive sexuality education. This includes connecting them with allies, counsellors, churches and medical practitioners should the need arise.
